Global Public Health Security: Imagination and Reality

Dr. Scott Dowell, a Rear Admiral in the Public health service and director of the CDCs Global Disease Detection program, will discuss his two decades of experience working at CDC in various capacities that revolve around the global health arena, including working on multiple outbreaks of infectious disease as an EIS officer, living and working in Thailand as a researcher, and most recently directing the US response to the cholera epidemic in Haiti. He will discuss the challenges facing a major US government agency with a long tradition of enhancing global health security, how an agenda is developed for prioritizing within the global health arena, and how best to balance the needs of global health security with those of developing countries.
