A new approach for the synthesis of single wall carbon nano horns decorated single wall carbon nano tubes was synthesized using arc discharge method in open air. Graphite die as a major modification, where the arc is established at the centre of the die between two graphite electrodes. It has given a relatively high production rate (300-350 mg/min) compare to the experiments done without graphite die (10-20 mg/min). FE-SEM analysis shows the presence of SWCNTs with spherical particles. In transmission electron microscopy analysis it is observed that, single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) are in a bundle as well as isolated form along with the spherical particles, contains nanohorns aggregated in the form of Dahlia flower, seed and buds. The bundles are composed of several individual SWCNTs with diameter of 1-3 nm and length of several micrometers is observed. The diameter of the dahlia like structure ranges from 10-60 nm and the mean size is ~ 28 nm which is significantly smaller than that of the previously reported values (~60 nm). Aligned SWCNTs are confirmed using HR-TEM, FESEM, and RAMAN analysis Techniques. This SWCNTs production technique also confirmed as a cheapest as well as highest production approach with high purity. Each specified results is verified by thermodynamical and electrostatic modeling.Production rate is also studied as a function of current density and time.Nature as well as orientation of electrodes is also studied as an essential parameter.
