While some collaborative online projects are massively successful - Mozilla Firefox, Linux, Wikipedia – these cases are exceptional. Success often depends on the ability attract new users, command the commitment, and produce high quality products. This talk will focus on expert participation in Wikipedia and experiments involving scholarly societies and college students in Wikipedia editing, with an eye toward how these insights can improve the sustainability and success of online collaborations.
