Bringing together information from multiple perspectives, Dr. Gaines will summarize global changes that motivate new approaches for understanding ecosystems and their services. A review of how ecological research has evolved at regional, national, and international levels will set the context for the symposium. Also summarized will be how the new science provided in this symposium can fill policy information needs and promote interdisciplinary, large-scale approaches to understanding ecosystems.
