A large fraction of the total biomass landed from the ocean comes from a relatively small number of enormous industrial fisheries. Global syntheses show that, on average, fisheries in this category are not substantially below stock sizes that support maximum yields. Further improvement in the management of large fish stocks could improve yields in specific fisheries, but is not likely to increase total landings by dramatic amounts.
