The Beauty of the Brain and the Mind

While the intricate anatomy of the brain and the cranial nerves is a marvel to anatomists the world over, modern imaging techniques allow us to see inside the "mind". This talk will show high resolution images of the cortex and white matter of the brain and combine those images with the beauty of the "mind in action". The mind will be explored with images showing functioning brain tissue, transmission of data from one part of the brain to another via the white matter tracts, the blood supply changes of the brain when challenged by such activities as holding one's breath, and the electrical conductivity of the electrical neurotransmission during abstract thought. From gray scale images to illustrative color maps, the brain will be explored not only as an organ, but as the source for cognition, emotions, memory, and action.
