Functional synthesis tests adaptive hypotheses at the molecular level. Comparative sequence analysis in dehydrogenases and α/β hydrolases identified mutations and sites retaining the putative signatures of selection. Molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and experimental evolution then tested these inferences. This fusion of classic comparative approaches with the modern experimental sciences of physics and chemistry is a powerful tool to identify mechanisms of adaptive evolution.
