Future projections of the climate are made using
climate models. These models are, in turn, informed by historical
observations of the climate. Since model-based projections are central
to formulating climate policy, it is critical to combine the
information from historical observations and climate models in a
rigorous fashion while carefully accounting for uncertainties in our
knowledge of the climate system as well as in the data sources. The
talk will outline the important role that probability models and
statistical thinking play in this endeavor.
