Scientific communities endorse values such as innovation and truth. However, authors, grant program officers, and journal editors believe that biases in peer review discourage scientists from pursuing research consistent with these values. This talk will explore the empirical research suggesting that scientific communities are in a state of doublespeak and discuss ways that scientific values can be realigned with researchers’ incentives to publish and win grants.
