Changes in shoreline configuration are the inevitable result of the rising sea levels caused by a warming climate. Urban settings comprise a mix of exposed and armored shorelines, complicating assessments of shoreline change hazards. We review dynamic geo-economic frameworks for characterizing human adaptations to shoreline change, draw lessons that may be applicable in urban settings, and identify areas for further research on the development and implementation of effective adaptation policies.
