While those in the field of synthetic biology are reporting dramatic progress, too often such reporting is difficult to understand, even by the most savvy. Consequently, the dialog can exclude the public from any engagement with the ideas and consequences. Informal science education venues must step up to programmatically and effectively construct a place for the public in the conversations. The open exchange of ideas and points of view is vital to this field and a wonderful topic for education.
