With challenges such as natural disasters and cyber attacks, both the United Sates and the European Union invest substantially into security research in order to stay ahead. The global homeland security market is estimated to grow to 200 billion USD by 2020, and global cyber security market to 150 billion respectively. But how to commercialize research results into a fragmented, mostly public sector market which today still has unsolved market barriers? This presentation discusses security innovations and start-up activity originating from academic research with examples from European innovation powerhouse Finland. The presentation also discusses actions being taken by the European Union in order to boost security innovations.
