The presentation will describe the results of several recent qualitative and quantitative research projects aimed at assessing the key variables underlying scientists’ willingness to engage in the context of the emergence of the empirical study of scientists’ understanding of the public. An effort will also be made to highlight the need for additional work in the area, the potential nature of such work and the potential advantages of leadership by AAAS and its affiliated societies.
