Humans derive great benefits from coasts and oceans, but in doing so impact those marine ecosystems. The Ocean Health Index quantifies benefits to people and tradeoffs among goals, emphasizing the full portfolio of benefits and cumulative impact of human actions on those benefits. We present results for regional case study applications of the Index (west and east coast US, Brazil, and Fiji), and with simulations we explore how climate change and biodiversity loss can affect overall ocean health.
