Science advice promises to make democracy more effective, and accountability measures aim to make science more democratic. Such efforts are undermined by neglect of social science research on tensions between science and democracy. Vigorous public participation often conflicts with informed deliberation, and overreliance on expertise may subvert political compromise and decision making. Effective science advice depends on better recognizing such tensions between science and democracy.
