Keep Out! Kids Only: How To Morph Your Science into a Whiz-Bang Book for Kids

Sunday, February 19, 2012: 12:15 PM-1:15 PM
Room 111-112 (VCC West Building)
Who writes science books for kids? Not just specialists in children’s writing, but scientists too. Ian Tattersall of the American Museum of Natural History has done it. So has astronomer Stephen Hawking. Learn from publishing pros how to crack the world of science books for kids. It looks easy, but it ain’t. The research that goes into a 200-page book for adults is captured in a mere 48 pages for kids. Every word has to count, and every description must make sense to young minds. How do you explain to an 8-year-old how big a dinosaur really is? And how do you sell your idea? The book outline is key, but what goes into an outline? What do publishers expect? Bring your ideas, your dreams, and your best “elevator speech” to this workshop.
