Egypt is going through a period of rapid transformation as it places democracy at the heart of its development. Ahmed Zewail, FRS and Nobel prize winner, has stated that scientific thinking is “the only thing that will carry Egypt forward” and produce “a whole generation of Egyptians with nearly unlimited potential”. But for a country whose scientific research was ahead of South Korea a few decades ago, a third of its population illiterate and brain drain further exacerbating the situation, Egypt has a lot of catching up to do.
