Egypt is going through a period of rapid transformation as it places democracy at the heart of its development. Ahmed Zewail, FRS and Nobel prize winner, has stated that scientific thinking is �the only thing that will carry Egypt forward� and produce �a whole generation of Egyptians with nearly unlimited potential�. But for a country whose scientific research was ahead of South Korea a few decades ago, a third of its population illiterate and brain drain further exacerbating the situation, Egypt has a lot of catching up to do.
