8186 The Social Costs of Marine Conservation

Saturday, February 18, 2012: 9:00 AM
Room 122 (VCC West Building)
Joshua E. Cinner , James Cook University, Townsville, Australia
Cinner will highlight the ways that marine conservation impacts resource users- both positively and negatively. Cinner will use data from across across Kenya, Madagascar, Vanuatu, and the Philippines to explore how marine protected areas may make fish easier to catch (a surprising and little known benefit for fishers), how temporary protected areas increase yields of fish and octopus, and how it is the poorest fishermen who are most displaced from protected areas but also are most likely to perceive benefits.
