The recent International Polar Year challenged natural and physical scientists, as never before, to engage with local communities in the north, as well as the broader academic community. Interdisciplinary collaborations were widely encouraged and supported. This presentation examines the lessons learned from IPY and includes the experiences of many co-authors in exploring how to build on these lessons in future northern research.
