Melissa Ahern , Washington State University, Spokane, WA
Dr. Ahern conducts research regarding the impact of coal mining on the health of residents living in coal mining regions. She is a coauthor of "Full Cost Accounting of the Life Cycle of Coal.” Ahern is currently completing studies related to significantly greater incidence of birth defects and some types of cancers in coal mining areas. Ahern will present her research on health disparities in coal mining communities, as well as statistical life lost estimates in Appalachian coal mining regions.
