Key to the success of the human proteome project (HPP) is to have easy access to open source data in a timely manner. neXtProt has been established at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics as a powerful new knowledge-base complementary to Swiss-Prot but with focus on deep annotation of human proteins. With an easy and intuitive user interface, neXtProt presents all relevant protein information and annotation on a protein-centric basis for the chromosome-centric HPP. Overall, the rapid and comprehensive dissemination of proteomic data assembled by the various chromosome consortia world-wide is assured.
