Historically, we have evaluated ocean health through the lens of a single use (e.g., fisheries) or a single stressor (e.g., coastal pollution). The Ocean Health Index is the first attempt to comprehensively evaluate the full set of benefits, uses, and stressors of oceans. I will describe how to use the Index as a diagnostic tool to set policy goals, design and implement regional planning, prioritize data collection, and develop monitoring plans in diverse settings.
