This talk will describe the use of high-resolution imaging to study the earliest phases of star and star cluster formation in nearby galaxies. These data allow astronomers to measure both the dense gas that is the star formation fuel, as well as embedded young stars and clusters that cannot be seen in visible light. Recent results from large surveys, and new results showcasing the power of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and the Expanded Very Large Array, will be discussed.
