Although interdisciplinary approaches are featured prominently in the formal strategic plans of many research-intensive universities and federal agencies, implementation of these plans remains both slow and varied. Drawing upon empirical findings and case studies, this presentation describes a range of institutional strategies to foster interdisciplinarity and explores the implications of successful or unsuccessful strategies on the competitive standing of individuals, programs, and universities.
