Mesoscopic semiconductor devices occupy the middle ground between the quantum world of individual atoms and the classical world of everyday objects. There are a variety of options for encoding quantum information in semiconductors, for example using electron spins, nuclear spins, or collective excitations in quantum wires. Marcus will review recent experimental explorations of these devices, and discuss the prospects for operating controllable large-scale systems.
