In this talk, the importance of interfacial chemistry of mineral dust and metal containing anthropogenic dusts on climate is discussed from several different perspectives. These include the roles of interfacial chemistry in: (i) heterogeneous chemistry; (ii) the efficacy of dust toward ice and cloud condensation nuclei activity; (iii) the optical properties of dust; and (iv) the solubility of iron in iron-containing dusts and the impact it has on ocean productivity. Laboratory studies designed to better understand the underlying physical chemistry of these processes will be discussed.
