This presentation considers the relationship between climatic hazards and social transformations from 900 to 1500 CE in the North Atlantic region and the U.S. Southwest. By considering diverse climatic hazards (droughts, extreme cold, storminess) and human subsistence strategies (domestic animals, cereal cultivation, fishing, hunting, maize agriculture) we are seeking generalizable statements about the influence of climatic conditions on social transformations that crosscut regions.
