The EMP has provided an unparrelled opportunity to explore the microbial diversity of planet earth. Yet without access to advanced computing resources in the US, China and Europe, these data would be just another survey. The power of the EMP is in the capability to turn these data in to descriptive and predictive models. Here we describe the development of Microbial Assemblage Prediction models which use microbial biodiversity and functional data and model the capability of ecosystems based on remote sensing data.
