The data processing and storage of the peta base pairs of sequencing performed by the EMP requires a parsimonious attitude to computing. The major computational analysis centers involved (MG-RAST, CAMERA, IMG, EBI, BGI-SOAP, etc) require a common format for exchanging results between data portals. This exchange format has been central to the development of the EMP and enables cross interpretation of open access data without the need for recomputes.
