How should research excellence be defined? Should one definition be applied uniformly across research fields, cultures, and sectors? And what measures should be used to evaluate research achievements? These questions and many more have become the focus of heated debate in the rapidly changing world of e-research, engaged scholarship, interdisciplinarity, multi-institutional collaboration and globally-connected research initiatives. This presentation will draw upon recent examples of innovative approaches to defining and pursuing excellence with a view toward advancing international discussion about new policies and practices for research in the 21st century.
