Founded in February, 2010, the Global Young Academy (GYA) aims to unlock the potential of early career researchers from around the world; working together, this group can provide new insights on major challenges in scientific capacity-building and science-based education, policy and international issues.  The GYA members include top young scientists who are around the age of 35 years old and nominated by their home national academies.  Since members serve 4-year terms, the organization is self-renewing and perpetually oriented towards the issues important to young scientists.  The GYA seeks to build bridges between science in the developed and developing world, thus resulting in a flatter, more prosperous world.  Ideally, this plan will help equip societies worldwide with the scientific acumen necessary to address the considerable challenges we face.  In this presentation, I will describe the motivation, history, and organization of the GYA.   Then, I’ll discuss how the membership and the activities of the GYA will provide a voice for young scientists around the world.
