Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degrees provide career training for people who want to do “active science” in a nonacademic (business, government, nonprofit) setting by combining rigorous scientific learning and workplace skills. Universities are establishing PSM degree programs at an accelerating rate, up nearly 30 percent in 2009 and even faster in 2010, spurred in part by grants from the National Science Foundation. Many of these innovative PSM degrees are interdisciplinary. Attendees will learn about these entrepreneurial focused programs, why employers value the graduates, and the special effort underway to attract more minority students and diversify the STEM work force.
