The Happy Planet Index compares human well-being to environmental stress. Its denominator is average national life satisfaction times life expectancy at birth, its denominator is the ecological footprint. It is part of the growing trend to complement traditional objective measures with subjective well-being. The presentation will discuss methodological advances in and applications of the measures.
