As shorelines creep closer to homes and inundate coastal areas, communities must assess the local consequences of sea-level rise in making adaptation decisions. Should they build protective structures, elevate homes, or relocate cities? Technology is leading to improved tools, allowing coastal managers to balance the needs of their communities with the short-term costs of adaptation and the long-term impacts of floodwaters and environmental degradation.
