Although well established in astronomy and vision science, adaptive optics has only more recently made significant headway in microscopy. In this talk, I propose to describe the extent to which the optical inhomogenities inherent in biological tissues degrade imaging performance, and introduce a new approach to adaptive optics capable of recovering optimal performance under such conditions, specifically deep within cortical brain tissue.
