Presentation Title: Examining Proximate and Underlying Causes of LUCC: Mixed theory and mixed methods

Abstract:

Unprecedented population growth and migration accompanied equally unprecedented land use and land

cover change in the tropics during the latter decades of the twentieth century. Diverse land change science conceptual theories are evaluated. The paper then examine theoretical and empirical advantages and disadvantages to employing spatial versus multi-level models for researching tropical LUCC at local and regional scales. Different models help elucidate how drivers can be simultaneously present, acting influentially at different spatial and demographic levels.
