Examples of advances in biomedical knowledge within the past twenty, ten, and five years ago that are dependent upon research with animals will be described. These will include the use of islet cells in transplant medicine, the development of vaccines for hepatitus A and B, and monoclonal antibodies. How these more recent biomedical research breakthroughs have lead to important and effective treatments in modern medicine will be described.
