In this paper we evaluate the hypothesis that in the social and cultural construction associated with the more collective polities the concept of what constitutes the virtuous will be expanded through a philosophical turn that highlights the significant role played by the commoner in society viewed broadly. We will accomplish this using both cross-cultural statistical analysis and more detailed case studies of selected societies.
