The EcoBlock is a replicable model for creating resource-efficient (approaching zero-carbon operation) neighborhoods. It uses a whole-systems approach, integrating energy generation from conservation and renewables (wind, solar, and biogas from garbage, sludge, and green waste) with the water and waste recycling. The neighborhood functions as a "smart" micro-utility using sensors and information technology to manage and operate the systems. The systems are integral to and dependent on the architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design, all of which promote transit use.
