The talk will present and overview of our best thinking in terms of physics beyond the standard model of particles and their interactions and how they are confronted with experiment towards understanding and characterizing the dark matter of the universe. I will discuss the questions of why there is dark matter, what we will learn by studying it, and what other big questions it is connected to.
