Boosting, Boasting, and Banning Bashing: Self-Promotion Techniques for Women

Sunday, February 19, 2012: 4:00 PM-5:00 PM
Room 111-112 (VCC West Building)
Women tend to be less integrated in male-dominated academic departments and face extra challenges related to impression management and professional development. The workshop is designed to help graduate students, postdocs, and faculty 1) understand the influence of gender, work culture, and psychology as related to career advancement, 2) recognize common forms of self-sabotage, 3) learn to silence self-criticism and increase positive self-talk, and 4) develop self-promoting and support-facilitating communication skills. Workshop attendees will participate in components of a resilience-building program that offers strategies to rise above the competitive and often “chilly” male-dominated doctoral programs in science and engineering.
