We summarize our Hawai'i Biocomplexity Project results, focusing primarily on the dynamic linkages between soils, agricultural intensification, population, and sociopolitical structures. We then describe on-going research in a new phase of the project, comparing three island socionatural systems in French Polynesia with respect to their vulnerability and resilience.
